Rebuilding
Come November 8th, it will be 2 years since the Camp (Paradise) Fire that pretty much wiped out my entire life. I lost so many thing… books, pictures, and data. And that means any source code that I didn’t have checked in, or that wasn’t on my main machine.
This got me to thinking, I should have checked all that into GitHub. A lot of it was demos, utilities, and test programs I refer back to from time to time. I was in no hurry to check it in because I didn’t think it would hold interest to many people. Well, if I had, it would be interesting for me. And who knows, maybe one person in a million could have been looking for what I had checked in.
A friend of mine was happy to have found my Kindle that he though he lost and burned in the fire. Turns out it was in a pocked in his car door. He was so happy to present it to me as he inadvertently drove it out of the fire. It wasn’t so amazing that he has saved the $100 device. It was amazing that the thousands of books were still there. And even more amazing, I could have bought a new one and got those thousands of books back. Not so with the thousands of physical books, CD, and DVDs I had.
So I am going to start checking stuff in, even if it’s only remotely interesting. That way, if anything happens to my machine again, it magically comes back.
